Margaret Sarah Croker, is best known for her extraordinary novel, The Question, Who is Anna published in the same year as this poem. The Feminist Companion to Literature in English describes this along with her other extant poems as "well written, feeling, but not remarkable." Romilly was one of the great reformers of his age, advocating the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of Catholics, and liberalising the British penal code.
