Abstract:
Footage from Body Mass a Cosmic Mass event. Includes a variety of clips showing the religious and spiritual iconography decorating the auditorium, the processes of setting up the event, performance pieces from African and Indigenous American traditions, dance, techno music, and prayer.

00:00:00 People are moving behind a backlit screen in an auditorium, there are people standing in the middle of the auditorium, standing in front of the stage, and sitting around the periphery. 00:00:22 Camera cuts to a small shrine with prayer candles depicting Jesus Christ and other religious, presumably non-western, iconography. 00:00:42 Camera cuts to a part of the room with a skeleton/nervous system structure projected on a cloth with a table in front. 00:01:20 Camera cuts to people sitting on scaffolding. eventually pulling the frame back to show more people standing around the scaffolding facing the stage. Chanting happens in the background while people work on the scaffolding. 00:02:34 Camera cuts to votive candles and a picture of an unidentified figure. Presumably another shrine. 00:03:19 Camera cuts to a crowd looking up a flight of stairs watching people playing what appears to be some kind of flute and accordion. 00:05:25 Camer cuts to a group of people on the floor of the auditorium making a long line with their hands linked. They sing together. 00:06:04 Camera cuts to more footage of the auditorium being set up for this event with shots of people presumably setting up and testing audio/visual/camera equipment. 00:08:16 Shots of people walking around the auditorium and viewing and interacting with the displays. Displays include back lit dancers behind screens, chakra charts, a live band, and various other religious iconography. 00:10:54 More shots of the crowd. Some people appear to be dancing, other potentially praying. The camera pans to the stage where the Matthew Fox who starts talking. He moves to the center of the auditorium where he introduces the event and the activities, they will be taking a part in. The events revolve around worship and invocations from African and Indigenous American traditions regarding prayer and the appreciation of the living body, as well as the body as light, and the significance of movement and dance. 00:17:59 A moment of silence. 00:18:45 A small group of people appear to be setting up the microphone and some instruments. A member of the smaller group starts speaking into the microphone identifying themselves a smaller subgroup of the community. The group has chosen to speak to the Spirit of [Elegua] the spirit of the child. They describe that spirits significance and why they were chosen for this event. 00:21:59 Their performance begins. The camera is focusing on the audio/visual/camera equipment recording the event behind the scenes. 00:22:57 The camera cuts to the middle of another performance where people are standing in the center of the auditorium, they are holding hands and chanting "Earth my body" while the audience dances and moves behind them as techno music starts to play. 00:23:43 Scenes of the crowd dancing to techno music.00:28:41 A scene of a child and presumably their father dancing behind one of the backlit screens. 00:29:14 Scene of a woman on stage speaking into the microphone about movement while slowly dancing. Another person onstage introduces another group and narrates over them while they congregate to the middle of the auditorium and begin singing, posing, and moving. 00:37:29 A speaker standing in the middle of the auditorium performs a speech. 00:38:46 A new performer, not in view of the camera, sings with string and percussion instruments. Scenes of the crowd listening. 00:42:10 Fox speaks into the microphone talking about grief and the body. He asks the crowd to get on all fours with their forehead on the ground and wail. As people finish this ritual someone off camera begins singing. 00:48:00 Scene of person singing on stage. 00:48:26 Scene of crowd singing together with the musicians on stage. People in the crowd slowly start standing up and find partners to move with. 00:53:51 A person standing in the middle of the auditorium performs a spoken word piece. 00:58:37 End of recording.
