Abstract:
Rabbi Leah Novick and others attend Leah's 70th birthday night service. There is singing, dancing, talking, and food presented throughout the service.
Note:
00:00 A congregation prepares to begin. The scene cuts to different women, possibly a rabbi, talking at the podium. A young girl lights a candle while a woman sings a song; 03:20 The camera pans over to Leah Novick who is also singing along to the songs; 10:00 Leah holds a cup of wine and takes a sip and passes it along. The congregation continues to sing songs and talk through the sermon; 17:25 Leah takes the podium and thanks everyone for attending. Leah talks about her own retrospective to get to a place of fulfillment or satisfaction in her life; 29:00 Irene Reti takes over the podium and talks about being a student under Leah. She also presents Leah’s oral history titled “Shekhinah in the Hills.” Irene continues to talk about the inspiration Leah has on her; 39:00 Leah speaks at the podium again. She talks about how inspirational the landscapes of California and Arizona have been to her. She talks about her friend in Arizona; 43:13 Rabbi [Emma?] takes the podium and begins to sing and clap with Leah. She also talks about Leah’s accomplishments; 48:18 Leah continues to talk about finding true friends. She mentions that she made an amazing friend named David and invites him up to the podium while she gives her blessing since David is about to embark on a journey through the Yucatan, China, and India; 58:33 Leah asks the congregation to hold up their hands to create a channel of blessing; 01:02:20 The scene cuts to a clip of David talking. The congregations begins to sing again; 01:06:55 The congregation stands around tables of food while Leah blesses the food; 01:10:43 David and another man play the drums and sing; 01:20:20 The congregations can be seen dancing to David’s music. Leah is dancing and singing as well; 01:25:49 The tape cuts to a scene of two large birthday cakes with another song playing in the background. Leah is presented with the cakes and blows out the candles.
