Abstract:
CIDOC course recording. Ann Roy explains to students that the course will culminate in a drag pagent, with students dressing to depict representations of the female image (see film reel 34-8, "Drag Pageant" in this collection). She mentions home movies that will be shown in the class. Recording continues, often with over-lapping voices and low volume, with women and men discussing topics of women's clothing, gendered chores, and women depicted in mythology and fiction. Margaret Fielder may be present. Ann reads from her journal and tells a story of her relationships with neighbors in Marfil and her difficulty building and outhouse. They touch on the symbolism of right and left hands. Possibly continues on sound tape 34-31 in this collection.
Note:
00:00 Ann introduces a session she is going to hold during her female consciousness course. Ann talks about a visual exercise the class is going to partake in which each participant represents a female appendage; 01:25 Ann talks about a hat she has from 1895 that she wants each person to experience wearing because it helps the wearer understand more about women and balance. She wants to film each woman’s experience while wearing the hat and other props Ann has; 04:45 Another woman in the course talks about a pageant that the women held and how one woman brought her grandmother’s shoes from China. She continues to talk about the aristocracy of Chinese culture; 09:00 Ann asks the class if they ever heard “whether the left hand of God is dirty or evil?” The class talks back and forth about the topic. One woman mentions her grandmother was born left-handed and was forced to write with her right hand; 15:00 [Cataloger’s note: Other people in the class share their stories but some of them are difficult to decipher.] Ann talks about a family digging a large hole in their backyard for an outhouse; 25:00 Ann poses a question to the class to consider and they have a discussion about it. [Cataloger’s note: Question difficult to understand.]
