Abstract:
Title from film container. Recording of conversation between Ann Roy and possibly Margaret Fielder, likely discussing the 1975 World Conference on Women and/or the International Women’s Year Tribune in Mexico City. They reflect on conflict among Latin American women - or the perception of conflict as covered in the media - and a press conference organized to express solidarity among feminist groups, which was disrupted by Spanish-speaking protesters. Tape cuts around 14:00 to Ann and Margaret discussing difficulties in communication between them, and issues of white American feminists as "cultural imperialists" in Latin America. They return to discussing disrupted speeches at a "Journalist Encounter" attended by Roy, where a group of young women, led by a man, shouted down a Greek woman for speaking English. Ann recounts working with other women after the event to draft a statement of healing and togetherness. Audio is often difficult to hear. See also 41-09, "Ann and Margaret."
Note:
[Cataloger’s note: Voices are very quiet throughout and it makes it difficult to decipher what is being said] 00:00 Ann talks about the dynamics of men and women at the time. She continues to talk about an international, feminist conference of women joining together from places such as Vietnam and South America to demonstrate to the press that feminism is not a counter-revolution, women stand in solidarity and their concerns are real and reasonable; 4:45 Ann talks about the chairman of the feminism conference, [Nadina Markova?] who was on the stage at this conference and who started this group. She was fired from several jobs for being too feminist which is why the group was started; 17:00 Margaret and Ann talk about how people interrupt each other when something bothers them during a conversation. Margaret and Ann feel like they are criticizing each other and they both attempt to clarify their positions with each other; 23:00 Margaret shares something about Ann that she feels is wrong and socially conditioned. She also talks about cultural imperialism and Ann and Margaret talk about Ann being American; 29:30 Margaret admits her and Ann are close enough to be able to talk about their different perspectives without putting each other down. Margaret talks about the word feminism in other countries. Ann responds about American interference in other countries. The women attempt to agree that it is only sisters that matter, not the country you come from; 33:00 Ann tells a story about a group of cheerleaders led by a young man. He exclaims "Bautista, no habla español!" repeatedly.
