Abstract:
Title from film container. Recording of conversation between Ann Roy and possibly Margaret Fielder, likely discussing the 1975 World Conference on Women in Mexico City. Topics include Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinman, the CIA, Ms. Magazine, Patty Hearst, anti-semitism, and division among leftist and feminist organizations. They discuss how the Movimiento de Liberacion de la Mujer (Women's Liberation Movement) boycotted the Conference, arguing that some politicians, especially men, wanted the conference in Mexico as a tourist attraction and to garner support of the United Nations, while shutting out Mexican women and Mexican domestic issues. Note:
[Cataloger’s note: Loud static noise from tape plays throughout and the voices are very quiet] 00:00 Two women, Ann, and Margaret, talk to each other about various topics, mostly including the 1975 World Conference on Women in Mexico City. 02:00 Margaret talks about something she has learned and a phone call; 09:00 Margaret talks about an assumption that some people are the CIA. They continue to talk about the Mexican government and politics in general; 16:10 Ann brings up a topic about journalists. Margaret responds with an example of hearing about the women in Chile banging on pots and pans and knowing exactly what was happening in Chile despite what journalism was writing or reporting; 26:00 Margaret talks about the culture and social conditions of women at the time.
