Transcribed from item: Documentation notes: 1974-1-2a to 1974-1-2d: Enlargement of the immediate area around the glaciers in the LANDSAT image of 1974-1-1. Again 1a is MSS band 4, 1b is MSS band 5, 1c is MSS band 6 and 1d is MSS band 7. The ice areas are best delineated on the near infra-red band 6 (and to a lesser extent on band 7). All the major ice fields in the region, including the Southwall Hanging Glaciers, can be identified. The Idenburg is visible to the left of the main glacier group. The front of the Meren Glacier appears to have retreated substantially and has almost merged with the Northwall Firn. Ther is no discernible change to the front of the Carstensz. This was confirmed by subsequent visits to the glaciers: between March 1973 and December 1974 the front of the Meren Glacier retreated 185 m; between March 1973 and August 1976 the front of the Carstensz retreated about 50 m.
