Pope Sixtus IV [Francesco della Rovere] largest and most remarkable commissioned public building was the Ospedale di Santo Spirito in Sassia (1473-1482), surmounted at the centre by a tower on an octagonal drum. In its main corridor he commissioned frescoes (1477-1481) of scenes from his life from an anonymous Roman painter. The oval steps leading to the cloister were designed by Ottaviano Mascherino.
