Description:
The second Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City (begun 1563) was built in the Plaza Mayor (now Plaza de la Constitución) in the centre of the city, near the site where the Aztec Templo Mayor was later discovered. It was based on Jaén Cathedral in Spain, and construction was continued under Claudio de Arciniega and Juan Miguel de Agüero ( fl 1574-1613); the cathedral was dedicated in 1656, although the towers were completed only in 1813.
