Having found it impossible to collaborate with either Bath's landlords or its Corporation, Wood financed his own first great undertaking, Queen Square and its vicinity (1728-1736). Here, in his own words, Wood gave a series of town houses 'the appearance of a palace'. His inspiration, in part, was Inigo Jones's Covent Garden Piazza (1631-1637), London, and probably also his own reconstruction of the Roman camp at Bath.
