Laurana was credited by Baldi (in 1590) with the design of the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino and praised as its architect also by Giovanni Santi. According to Rotondi's reconstruction of the palace, Laurana must have begun work there after the completion of the Jole wing and the building at right angles to it extending downhill. In the six years of his residence in Urbino he built much of the cortile between these two wings, part of the structure on the valley side, and the long wing on the main square that runs from the grand double stairway to the façade of the torricini (the small towers) at its western end. It is doubtful whether he also laid the foundations of the Veglie wing, extending towards the Castellare; this is better attributed to Francesco di Giorgio Martini, along with the wing under the giardino pensile (hanging garden).
