Matthew explains to his mother why he hadn't recieved any mail or responded to his mother's letter sooner. He also talks about the colder weather in the mountains. He reassures his mother that he has been in good health and not to worry about him. He tells his mother he is stronger than he ever has been after climbing and working on the mountain. He also talks about a mining claim.
