Description:
|
The high school media class continues discussing small town growth as new employers arrive. Highways are built, trailer parks appear, and retail business increases. The main concern; however, is the limited supply of water in the region. The U.M.W.A local holds a special meeting to discuss a contract offer. An article is read aloud, explaining the current labor dispute. Another article is read, criticizing a P&M settlement, which local unions are being pressured to accept or face a government injunction. Union leaders admit to having missed an important section that makes the new contract (P&M) identical to what was previously voted down (BCOA offer). A discussion follows what they would be able to negotiate for and vote on in the future. The miners are worried about their pension fund and benefits. What the majority opposes is separate, local contracts in a "divide and rule" fashion and some speak out for continuing the strike.
