Description:

Three Show Indians, possibly of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples, and a man dressed as a cowboy pose in front of a tipi in Wyoming. The legacy metadata from the original collectors stated the men were performing at Frontier Days in Wyoming. This show might also be part of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. According to Paul Fees, former curator at the Buffalo Bill Museum, although Buffalo Bill typically treated and paid Indians the same as all performers in his shows, the shows still stereotyped them as aggressive, "war-bonneted warriors" who were considered to be the "last impediment to civilization." These stereotypes ultimately led to dangerous consequences for indigenous peoples.
