Description:
|
Mrs. Martha Todd discusses growing up among the coalfields. They visit old houses which used to be part of the "company town," and Taltec (formerly the Fruth and Autrey Ranch). She recalls railroad tracks, numerous mines, saloons, irrigation ditches, livery stable, a clubhouse (for parties and dances). She points out several former CF&I mines. She mentions neighbors who emigrated from many countries, came to this area and assimilated. Her grandfather was a miner from childhood and a former homesteader. She describes the chore of hauling water. At times, her husband had to walk 3 miles each way, to and from the mine. He later learned radio and TV repair to supplement his income. She recounts tales of widows who bought and ran boarding houses in the coal camps.
