Description:
|
Interview with Welsh immigrant miner, Welchie Matthias, in which he lists the dozens of mines that speckled Colorado during the mining rush, the dangerous mining conditions, and operational procedures leading up to the labor movements. Matthias discusses the cultural diversity in the mining camps including Welsh, Italian and Mexican immigrants. Life in mining camps is described in detail, the living conditions for families in huts throughout the mining camps, and how they were allowed to spend free time when so little was available to them. According to Matthias, mining companies managed to profit from the laborers first in the mines, and later in the mining camp stores which provided the food and supplies that were necessities for workers and their families. Matthias also stresses the importance of union involvement in the labor movement, and his loyalty to the union which has endured over the decades.
