Description:
85-year-old coal miner, Pete Gergich speaks of his emigration from Yugoslavia in 1912, when agents recruited him for work in the U.S. He hand-loaded coal for 53 years, his favorite method being digging with a pick and a shovel in 3-4 ft. high shafts. Recovering the dead after a mine explosion was also part of that life. He became active in the U.M.W.A with Mike Livoda, was black-listed for 2 years, and resorted to taking difficult and dangerous mining jobs that no-one wanted. Sheriff Jeff Farr, who was on mining company pay roll, regularly bullied union organizers. During the Depression Grgich and three other miners leased their first mine, and eventually they had a 30-miner operation going but failed to make a lot of money. He believes unions now ask for too much, which drives up prices for goods. Also, young miners would not last under conditions in which he worked.
