Strip mining--Environmental aspects--United States
Description:
In the 1970s the then-largest power plant in Colorado was built in the city of Craig and coal mines were constructed in the area to produce fuel for it. An engineer with Utah International talks about the planning required and the effects this boom was having for local residents. The office building and three draglines alone would take three years to build. A discussion follows about this kind of development and how towns bear the consequence of being either for or against it. He explains the environmental laws which now require 'land reclamation,' i.e., returning it to its original state. He is with the Union of Operating Engineers, has watched the mining documentary, and believes that it is biased and only shows the negative aspects of coal mining. The interviewers defend their intentions and objectivity, pointing out that it is a historical account.
