Description:
An account is given of three generations of a Colorado family. James B. Dick emigrated from Scotland in 1859, and his parents followed in 1881. He worked as a miner in Pennsylvania and then settled in Walsenburg, where he eventually became active in city, county, and state politics. He owned a wholesale liquor and cigar store until the Prohibition and then went into banking and the coal mining business. He set up the Huerfano Trading Company, which ran stores at mine camps. Later the Huerfano Agency Company sold coal to state institutions and neighboring states. His son, George, was made General Manager of the Operation of Mines. He was still young and learned on the job, traveling to mines, talking with miners, and transporting payroll. The mining business collapsed as natural gas became preferred and rail rates went up. Around 1970 they lost their customers and closed the mines.
