Description:
This coal miner came to Colorado in 1920 from a small town in Italy, and he worked in the Tobasco mine. His father, too, had worked the coal mines around Trinidad. The interviewers show his panoramic photographs of mining towns and he points out the company store, YMCA, boarding house, mule barn, etc. He talks about his accidents and recounts fatal accidents he witnessed. While recovering from a cracked pelvis for two years, the family survived on credit and the children working. He says he much preferred hand loading coal since there was a variety of digging, loading, checking ceiling structure, and waiting for the coal car to return. With machines, it is a monotonous job all day long. He also describes working with mules and recalls how much he loaded and what he was paid.
