Description:
A couple in their sixties recounts emigrating from Greece and coming to Utah. Mrs. Bikakis' father was recruited in Crete in 1904 and was sent to Utah, where she was born. Bikakis spent a month on Ellis Island with his mother and sister, before they were allowed to rejoin his father in Utah. He began working in coal mines when he was 14. After 16 years, he quit mining, had a ranch, a grocery store, and finally a tavern in Sunnyside, which the couple turned into a Greek restaurant. They reminisce how local Greeks made good wines. The town's population is down from 12,000 to 3000. U.S. Steel (Provo) and Kaiser Steel (Fontana, CA) are still running mines and one of their two sons is a miner. There is talk with other people in the restaurant about farming, ranching, and droughts.
