Description:
Interview with ex-miner John Valdez in Walsenburg, CO. Valdez looks at various articles and explains them to the interviewers, photos and awards given to the mine for safety, etc. Valdez tells about how the coal was once mined by individuals who were paid by the ton. He also describes incidents that endangered his life when he worked in the mines, and a particular incident that injured his back, requiring him to have extensive rehabilitation. John Valdez also tells the interviewers all of the mines he has worked for in his lifetime, scattered around Colorado and Wyoming, and how he followed a supervisor from one site to the next for the work, taking his family with him as he moved. When asked about how his family felt about the migrant nature of the work, he says that his son was very upset when they left Rock Springs, Wyoming, because he was about to graduate from high school. Valdez also discusses the labor movement and the effect that the strikes had on his daily life.
