Description:
|
Two retired coal miners recount their coal mining days, from management obstructing union membership to the squabbling among unions (e.g., AFL, IWW, UMW) and to incompetent decision-making regarding mine safety. They compare older and younger miners' attitudes and regional differences (Utah, Wyoming, Europe). They also address issues of race and ethnicity. They both still attend union meetings but question the effectiveness of the leadership, especially compared to the times of UMWA president John L. Lewis. They feel that the federal government ought to be more involved in coal mining issues, that environmental concerns need to come before profit-making, and that coal mines should be nationalized. While younger people are better educated and have more opportunities, they admit that, for them, mining would have been hard to quit. They liked the challenge and hard work but feel that coal miners' services and know-how is not appreciated by society.
