Calendar page from Book of Hours (headed 'September' on recto, 'October' on verso). England, s. xv. 125 x 85 mm. Parchment. Single leaf. Single column; 87 x 54 mm.; ruled and bounded in black/ brown. 2-line gilt initials at beginning of each month infilled in blue or purple with white tracery; some saints' names rubricated.
Abstract:
Example of Gothic script: Calendar page (October), Book of Hours. Fifteenth century, English. [Alternately, from a Flemish Book of Hours made for English use? One scholar, however, thinks the distinctive spelling of Cuthbert points to a probable northern English provenance, "possibly Yorkshire." Recto has a note in a different hand, obit Thos. de Kirkeby (?) or de affordby. . . 1409.]
