description:
Samuel Shapiro compares Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution with the abolitionist John Brown in the United States. J.P. Morray speaks to charges against Castro: cruelty, power hunger, long-windedness, treacherousness, deceit. I.F. Stone states that Cuba is the only country to emerge out of anti-colonialism after World War II which went Communist. He says that we made Cuba completely dependent on Moscow, and that Castro is fundamentally an independent person in contrast to the moribund Soviet bureaucracy. John Culver critically remarks on passages in J.P. Morray's book, and also on an article by Samuel Shapiro on which his talk was based. Panel chair Rita Weiss presiding.
