Bursten, born 1940, by Dr. Justin Jaron Lewis via Skype from the interviewee's home in California to the interviewer's office. 00:00 Interview begins with an introduction of the interviewer and interviewee, as well as location information; 00:08 Justin reads an article that Sid wrote about Reb Zalman called “Reb Zalman and Me: A Personal Remembrance” by Sidney L. Bursten; 09:35 Justin asks Sidney to read his article that was published by the Winnipeg Jewish Review. The article talks about Zalman’s time at the University of Manitoba and at the Hillel house from Sidney’s perspective; 18:50 Sidney talks about meeting Zalman when he was 18 years old and Zalman was around 36 years old. Sidney mentions he was a loner at Hillel house but Zalman was always open to talk about anything. Zalman started to invite him over to his house; 27:40 Sidney talks about meeting his future wife in 1963 when she was still a high school student and he was at university; 28:55 Sidney talks about Zalman’s new way of being “observantly Jewish” and the groups he put together for both men and women to join; 40:00 Sidney talks about a Kodak process of photographing and printing to make posters for Hillel events. Zalman had quite a great publishing operation going with the printing press in Hillel house. Many things were mailed out from Hillel house; 48:35 Justin asks if Zalman got along with the other rabbis in Winnipeg. Sidney states he got along with some of them; 52:00 Sidney talks about leaving Winnipeg and joining a synagogue in Wisconsin; 57:20 Justin asks how Zalman’s influence changed Sidney’s life. Sidney does not believe he would be Jewish today without Zalman’s influence; 01:07:07 Interview ends.
