Audio interview of Lionel Steiman, born 1941, by Dr. Justin Jaron Lewis at the interviewee's home in Winnipeg. Note: Interviewee had little contact with Rabbi Schachter; this interview is mostly about background on the Winnipeg community, Jewish and non-Jewish. 00:00 Interview begins with an introduction of the interviewer and interviewee, as well as location information; 01:00 Lionel clarifies that he had a Christian upbringing but had friends who were Jewish and had connections with the Hillel house. He explains his recollections are from indirect contact with Zalman. He states Zalman was always smiling and a big man; 03:08 Lionel tells stories of going over to Rabbi Schachter’s house and his friend’s brother asking Zalman to read over something he wrote and how unhappy Zalman was with it; 04:51 Justin asks Lionel to look through his year books and remember people he grew up with in Winnipeg; 20:00 Lionel tells a story about a time he left church and kids were fighting with each other. A Ukrainian woman tells the boys that “Jews don’t fight!” He continues to talk about the views of the Jewish community in Winnipeg; 24:09 Lionel tells an antisemitic story about the time his mother took a trip to Israel and wrote a letter to the principal of a Luthern school in the community about the horrors of the Holocaust. The man wrote back and said “what the communists did was worse.” Lionel and his mother were taken aback by the comment; 29:22 Justin asks if Lionel thought of himself of at least half Jewish while he was in university; 37:26 Justin thanks Lionel for his interview.
