Audio interview of Len Udow, born 1945, by Dr. Justin Jaron Lewis at the interviewee's office in Winnipeg. 00:00 Interview begins with an introduction of the interviewer and interviewee, as well as location information; 00:34 Len states that not only did his life and Zalman’s life intersect at times but their lives seemed to run very parallel. He starts by talking about his childhood and Zalman’s arrival to Winnipeg. He tells a story about taking rolls of toilet paper with his friend and throwing them like streamers off a balcony while Zalman danced at a religious event; 19:30 Len talks about the school that Zalman developed where people would go to study with him. He remembers talking to a young woman who confided in Len that she was following Zalman because it was a new kind of Judaism that women could be involved with. He continues to say that she took LSD and tried to create her visions in her art. Len talks about his own inward journey with Zalman and reflects on his roots growing up; 14:00 Len talks about a Judaism course he took with Zalman. He admits it was not a good platform for him; 21:38 Len talks about the gossip revolved around Zalman around the time he left for Colorado; 22:47 Len talks about his position as a singer and how he had to step in for a coworker and realized he would have to help many more families who lost loved ones. He went to a family home where a young woman had died. Len was given the last book the young woman was reading and it was “The Jew and the Lotus” and he felt a connection to the woman and remembered how much personal time Zalman shared with others; 29:41 Justin asks Len about a book that has a prayer in it by Reb Zalman from the 1970s; Justin asks if Len remembers any of the other rabbis that came through town and left; 41:58 Len asks Justin if any of Zalman’s family is still living in Winnipeg; 45:00 Justin thanks Len for his participation in the interview.
