Audio interview of Joseph (Joe) Wilder, born 1935, by Dr. Justin Jaron Lewis at the interviewee's office in Winnipeg. 00:00 Interview begins with an introduction of the interviewer and interviewee, as well as location information; 00:58 Joe begins by mentioning that he was the first person Zalman met when Zalman moved to Winnipeg in 1956. Joe was the president of Hillel house at the time. Zalman gave Joe a hug and kiss and acted like he had known him all his life; 05:10 Joe talks about how relatable Zalman was to younger kids and how charming he was. He continues to say how impressed he was with Zalman’s knowledge of the world. For example, Zalman brought an aquarium to Hillel and knew all about the fish; 06:00 Joe tells a story about Zalman talking at a Jewish fraternity and how he did not have anything to prepare to talk about but figured it out in the moment; 09:30 Joe talks about Zalman Schachter’s name addition of the Shalomi part, stating Zalman wanted more balance in his name; 10:30 Joe talks about the entertaining programming and events Zalman held; 15:25 Joe mentions that there was nothing Zalman did to upset him. Joe became involved with politics even though Zalman was not fond of politics; 18:26 Joe talks about how both men and women hung around Zalman and how women were able to participate in events; 23:06 Justin asks Joe what language was spoken in his house. He mentions Yiddish and English; 24:50 Joe tells a story about his friends taking him to the first Y [YMCA?]; 28:19 Joe tells a story about confronting a priest for something he said because he could not stand conversations about antisemitism; 32:20 Justin thanks Joe for his interview.
