Abstract:
Recorded lecture #15 provided by Dr. Peter Ossorio from his advanced personality course titled Personality and Personality Theories. Ossorio clarifies questions from the class about Sigmund Freud's developmental theory. During the second half of the recording Ossorio talks about the developmental aspects of Freud’s theory.
Note:
00:00:00 The recording starts with a question from a student asking how judgment differs from confidence. 00:03:55 Another student asks a question about superego functioning and identification. Dr. Peter Ossorio responds with an answer about confidence. 00:07:42 A student asks a follow-up question about the behaviors of the parent and child from Sigmund Freud’s theory of development. 00:09:40 Another student asks Ossorio to clarify a distinctive feature of theory. Ossorio talks about instances. 00:15:15 A student asks Ossorio about the reality principle. He talks about id, ego, and superego. 00:20:21 A student asks about objects and the real world. Ossorio mentions an origin problem. 00:26:10 Ossorio asks, “What is this notion of mechanism?” He talks about the notion of a process. He also talks about displacement as a mechanism. 00:34:10 Ossorio talks about a single stage process. 00:40:40 Ossorio writes chapters on the chalkboard and instructs the students to read them. 00:41:05 Ossorio responds to a question about the psychiatric object. 00:46:57 Ossorio switches the conversation to the developmental aspects of Freud’s developmental theory. 00:57:46 Ossorio continues the discussion by asking students to think of the different types of ID characteristics that would be imposed on an infant’s behavior in certain circumstances. 01:21:40 Ossorio circles the conversation back descriptively to psychoanalytic theory. 01:24:15 Ossorio asks the class what might happen in the case of deprivation or being thoroughly gratified in the case of the infant discussed previously. 01:28:00 Ossorio talks about the notion of preoccupation and fixation. 01:32:14 End of recording.
