00:00:04 The City of Algiers. 00:00:06 The ancient harbor of the Barbary pirates is dominated now by palaces of modern commerce --- 00:01:16 The French quarter, more modern than any city in France, save Paris, shows little of its past as the capital of a pirate empire. 00:01:42 The sons of the sea-roving Barbary corsairs of yesterday are the harbor boat-men of today --- 00:02:00 The aspect of the streets is surprisingly Parisian --- 00:02:39 A street scene and our first glimpse of Mohammedan woman. 00:03:59 A study of characters: All of us agreed that the women should have had all their faces covered! My, they are homely!! 00:04:57 Saturday night? 00:05:13 But the markets are still redolent of the Islam and the East --- 00:05:30 The Mosque of the Fishermen overlooks the busy center of "Infidel" activities --- 00:05:44 Above the sumptuous city of the Franks we see the whited dwellings of the Arab population --- 00:05:59 It is like going back a thousand years to cross the threshold of the Arab city --- 00:06:11 Veiled women-shrouded-faceless-formless-and inscrutable --- 00:06:24 These streets of the "Kasbah" are seldom on the level --- 00:06:34 No rumble of the wheeled traffic - nothing save the guttural grumble of Arabic contentions --- 00:06:59 Lost in the labyrinth of an Arabian yesterday --- 00:10:08 In the native market the atmosphere remains as we see people carrying on their business just as they have for centuries past. 00:12:45 End of recording.
