00:00:00 Pineapple plantations stretch for more than thirty miles over hill and dale - 00:00:21 Thousands of acres are under cultivation - 00:00:40 Endless avenues of delicious fruit - 00:01:00 The manager tells us the story of the pineapple - "from plantation to palate" - First the ground must be cleared of stones - 00:01:22 The plowed - 00:01:32 Pineapples are grown from "suckers" - not from seed - 00:01:49 Planting "suckers" - One is planted every minute. 00:02:08 Deepening the drainage furrow. The plants must stand high and dry on ridges - 00:02:27 Imagine fifteen miles of this on one plantation and thirty-five miles on another - 00:02:44 Indicating the "slips" and the "suckers" on the growing plant. 00:03:21 How the peerless ones are picked. 00:04:05 Everything up-to-date - Note the ingenious trucks. 00:04:21 They're off! - 00:04:38 Shoved through the cylindrical "sizer" - they shed their coats and spill their juice. 00:05:00 On their way - getting trimmed as they go. 00:05:26 Through the "slicer" which also punches out the cores. 00:05:44 Dainty disks by the dozen - 00:05:57 Sorted by dusky damsels wearing rubber gloves. 00:06:05 Girls from everywhere - Japan, China, Portugal, the Azores, Korea and the Philippines. 00:06:29 The cosmopolitan exodus at midday. 00:06:49 All the workers are happily housed. 00:06:57 We are delighted to discover that Hawaiian girls really DO strum the Ukulele - 00:07:14 The back to work - still strumming. 00:07:33 The "juicer" which pours syrup in each can - 00:07:54 Cans are cooked, sealed and recooked - 00:08:09 - and lacquered and labeled and packed - 00:08:34 A time saver that makes nails keep their heads up. 00:08:58 This year over a million cases will be sent from these fruitful shores - 00:09:17 - where miles of fruit is ripening under the Hawaiian sun. 00:09:41 "And that", concluded the manger, - "is how the pineapple progresses from plantation to palate" 00:09:54 End of recording.
