Abstract:
Tape contains unidentified music, often distorted or dissonant, including various chanting and singing.
Note:
00:00 Recording begins, there is static and crackle noises throughout the recording; 00:18 A woman’s voice begins to sing the line “God is a lie, magic is afoot” repeatedly. She switches the lyrics and sings “God is afoot, magic is a lie” and “magic never dies.” The woman continues to sing about magic, God, and man. An acoustic guitar is played in the background throughout the song; 02:00 The tempo picks up and the guitar is played more aggressively. The lyrics continue to sing about magic and the way people use it; 03:40 The song repeats the same lyrics from the beginning, “God is a lie, magic is afoot” and sound effects have been utilized for the woman’s voice to make it sound like it is reverberating. 04:30 The recording changes to a new song. A choir of people sing or chant in the distance. The lyrics are hard to decipher but it sounds religious in theme. Soft drums play in the background; 06:30 A man talks over the choir and he sounds like a religious priest asking the audience to “come”; 08:00 A new recording begins with a drum beat. A man sings about “our father God in heaven” and “the day of reckoning,” as well as other religious lyrics, while the same group that chanted in the previous recording sings “Amen” after the man finishes his lines; 12:18 A new recording begins with a man singing loudly. The lyrics are difficult to decipher. The same group, or choir, from the previous recordings sing in the background. The choir in the background provides various harmonies with their voices while men sing over the choir; 20:22 The recording stops and the same man begins to sing without the choir; 22:25 The choir begins to sing again in the background with the man; 26:15 The recording stops momentarily and then a person continues to sing religious hymns with an instrument playing along; 30:56 Recording stops and the choir of people begin to sing or chant the same thing repeatedly; 38:36 Recording stops and changes to a band playing a rock song. There is a guitar, drums, tambourine, bass guitar, keyboard or synthesizer, and various other instruments played throughout the song. A man begins to sing and there are backup singers in the background; 40:40 Recording stops and a new song begins. A sound effect that resembles wind is played. Drums and other instruments begin to play; 43:20 A guitar solo plays over the rest of the instruments; 51:10 The same song continues with another guitar solo; 01:02:53 The same song continues with another guitar solo; 01:04:30 Recording stops and another song starts. An electric guitar quickly plays a solo; 01:06:55 Recording stops and a synthesizer or guitar is played periodically.
