Tyndall Glacier. Left: 1946. Right: 1942. Looking westerly up the south edge of the glacier from base of terminal ridge. This portion of the glacier is shaded for a major portion of the day, so that changes are less sharp in years when marked changes take place at the front or in the main body of the glacier. Fallacy of measurement from X' to nearest visible ice, especially when it is made up of compacted frozen overlay as in 1942 is pointed up by comparison of these two photographs. The rock debris in lower portion of 1946 photograph is same as that in middle lower portion of 1942 photograph, making it evident that the apparent 1942 front is not true. Plate XIV; 46MA-P26 (right). Rocky Mountains, South.
