Transcribed from item: Handwritten Note on back of photograph: Aug. 22, 1960. Black Rapids Glacier: Examination of photography at various periods since 1936 indicates that these are all that remain of former lakes which formed in major crevasses when glacier movement ceased - almost complete stagnation has since discouraged subglacial drainage in this area and ablation removed the ice around the crevasses leaving only shallow depressions those that remain undrained lasted longest - one by one they are disappearing such features are found on a few other glaciers and probably are evidence similar movements and periods of stagnation.
