Description:
The chair is constructed of shell-molded reinforced (with polyester) fiberglass; the base is lacquered (with a fused plastic coating called rilsan) aluminum. The cushion is foam latex covered with fabric (or leather) and is attached to the chair with Velcro. The pedestal chair also swivels. It was not only Saarinen's inventiveness that influenced mainstream architectural practice but also his technical accomplishments. In addition to the exemplary use of structure as a form-giver, as in his "Pedestal" furniture series, he ultimately developed thin-skin technology to a new level of efficiency. The Tulip Chair was one of the Pedestal series, commissioned and manufactured by Knoll. There is a matching table; the chair comes in a side chair or armchair style.
