Description:
From the Albani Collection; Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692-1779), nephew of Pope Clement XI, was famous for his antiquarian interests and his important collection of statues. This was one of the statues that decorated the Villa Albani. The collection was seized by Napoleon in 1797 under the Treaty of Tolentino, and purchased by the Louvre in 1815. Restored in the workshop of B. Cavaceppi in the 18th century, it was finished with the head of another statue. (Source: Louvre Museum [website]; http://www.louvre.fr/)
