Matthew writes a letter to his parents. He expresses his sorrow and disappointment after returning from a three month long trip in the Saun Juan mountains in New Mexico. He was prospecting for gold or minerals and was not able to find anything. He also talks about learning the death of a friend [Walter?] he considered as a brother once he returned.
